About Backpackfieldtest
A Personal Opening
Ever since I first laced up hiking boots and stepped onto an unmarked trail, I’ve been hooked on exploring the great outdoors. Over the years, I’ve faced everything from rain-soaked mountaintops to desert heat, pushing my gear to its limits and learning what truly works in the real world. I started this site because I wanted to cut through the marketing hype and share honest reviews based on actual trail experience. If you’re like me — passionate about hiking, camping, and outdoor adventure — you know how crucial reliable gear is to enjoying and surviving the wilderness. My goal is to help you make informed choices so you can focus on the adventure, not the gear failures.
About Ryan Caldwell
Hi, I’m Ryan Caldwell, and I’ve been passionate about long-distance backpacking for over a decade. I’ve thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail (AT), Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), and Continental Divide Trail (CDT), each time learning what gear stands up to thousands of miles of tough conditions. These experiences gave me firsthand insight into how gear performs over time, under different weather patterns, and through challenging terrain.
For example, during my PCT thru-hike, I faced relentless rain in Northern California and the Sierra Nevada. My tent and rain jacket had to work together to keep me dry, and I tested their limits day after day. On the CDT, I battled high-altitude windstorms, testing the durability of my sleeping bag and trekking poles. These journeys forced me to evaluate every piece of gear I carried, teaching me what satisfies my own standards for weight, durability, weather resistance, and practicality. Over hundreds of miles, I learned to discern between gear that’s genuinely reliable and items that are better left on the shelf. That’s the experience I bring to every review on this site.
My purpose is to share this accumulated knowledge with fellow outdoor enthusiasts, so you won’t have to spend endless hours researching. You can trust my judgment—based on real trail miles—to guide you toward gear that will serve you well on your own adventures.

How We Test & Review
Honest, transparent reviews are at the core of what I do. When testing gear, I evaluate based on three main criteria: weight, durability, and weather resistance. I want gear that’s lightweight enough to carry long distances, tough enough to handle rough conditions, and capable of keeping me protected from the elements.
My testing process involves using each piece of gear over extensive miles — often thousands — in a variety of environments. I observe how it holds up over time, how easy it is to set up and use, and whether it meets the needs of serious outdoor explorers. For example, I’ll test a tent in wind, rain, and high temperatures; a sleeping bag in cold weather; and shoes on rocky, uneven trails. I also look for comfort, weight distribution, and ease of use. I keep detailed notes and compare multiple options in each category.
To maintain transparency, I disclose that some affiliate links are included on this site. However, please be assured that my review scores are unbiased and solely based on the gear’s performance. My recommendations are only for products I believe will genuinely benefit your outdoor pursuits.
